Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, an Israeli doctor descended from a family deported during the holocaust, is considered one of the first to have defended the interest of the use of low-THC cannabis in medicine, given that certain civilizations did it well before our time. He faces some difficulties because of the illegal aspect of the product at the time he starts his work. He begins by focusing on the treatment of epilepsy. It is as a result of this work that he and his team discover the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. Anandamide is the name it gives to the molecule acting as the main neurotransmitter.
In the 1960s, he isolated tetrahydrocannabinol and then cannabidiol. These substances are better known as THC and CBD. Since then, there are dozens of Cannabinoids. In this documentary, the researcher describes his work but also his childhood and reveals the importance of medicine in our world. “The scientist” was realized over four years in association with Fundacion CANNA.
